Balanced Rock
Balanced Rock is near the town of Buhl, ID not far from Twin Falls. It is about a 33-minute drive from Twin Falls, on Balanced Rock Road. In the middle of nowhere, surrounded by flatland, this volcanic feature rises up aligned in a ridge along the Salmon Falls Creek Canyon. Balanced Rock is over 48’ high and the pedestal on which it stands is 3’ 17”. It is made of rhyolite, a type of volcanic material. It’s said that this feature was created from numerous volcanic actions millions of years ago, however, since cameras were not around then, that information is not verifiable. We do know that the erosive properties of wind, rain, snow and ice have contributed to its shape. Not to burst a bubble, the pedestal of this awesome rock has been reinforced to keep it standing tall. Many times, the rock has been vandalized in an effort to topple it.
