Switzerland County

The county was named for the Country of Switzerland, from which many of the early settlers came.  Vevay (pronounced VEE-vee),which sits along the Ohio River, is the County Seat.  Those first settlers were intent on cultivating grapes and producing wine and ultimately,  Vevay was home to the first commercial winery in the U.S.   The county earned the title” the Rhineland of America.  There are eight locations in the county that are on the list of the National Register of Historic Places, such as the Benjamin Schenck Mansion, and the town is filled with beautiful Historic architecture.
