Hancock County
Hancock County was formed in 1828 and named after John Hancock, president of the Continental Congress who prominently signed his name on the Declaration of Independence. It is home to some interesting History. James Whitcomb Riley, born in Greenfield, was known as the “Hoosier Poet”and his chief legacy was his ability to create a kind of mid-western cultural identity. Many memorials of him are located in the county, and a four day Festival is held annually in his honor. The town of Greenfield is the county seat. Old US Highway 40, the National Highway, and I-70 both cross the County.
