Allen County
The largest city in Allen County is Fort Wayne, which was named after General Anthony Wayne. It was founded on October 22, 1794, when the Wabash-Erie portage was captured from the Miami tribe. They called it Kekionga. The location of Fort Wayne was chosen because of the proximity to three rivers, the Maumee, the St. Joseph and the St. Marys. Nicknamed ‘the summit city’, it is located at the highest elevation along the Wabash and the Erie Canal’s route. The City boasts 1, 301 miles of roads and 33,879 street lights. It has 15 museums to explore and has 86 parks. It is also known as the ‘City of Churches’, as it has 360.
